Go Big or Go Home

We scheduled our follow-up appointment after IVF Number Two with Dr. T. I wasn’t expecting much. At this point in my unfertile career, like most other unfertiles, I felt like I knew more, had researched more, and was as up to speed on my “medical” condition as anyone could be.

Dr. T. didn’t disappoint. I think he was as frustrated as we were that the results weren’t better, especially based on my initial tests.

He knew I was a realist and liked to be treated as such. I told him this was our last go, so was there anything, anything at all, we could learn from the first two that would help on this one? He really didn’t think so. The old lady IVF protocol had been discussed with the team and they still felt this was the right route to go. Lead follicles are something they can’t do too much about. It really depends on how one’s body responds to the drugs. He felt they had done pretty well to get seven eggs, based on the way it had gone. I actually agreed with him; based on what I had read, this was pretty good. I told him I thought I had in fact conceived and explained the extreme pain, blood loss, and cramping that had occurred.

“You may be right from what you’ve said. So there is some good news, if that is in fact the case, an egg might have taken.” I filled in the rest of the sentence for him, “But now there might be a problem with my holding on to a baby.”

“That is a whole different set of issues, but as it was so early and we are not even sure you were pregnant, let’s just focus on the first part. The other good news is that Sam didn’t faint.”

I laughed. Sam didn’t.

“Are we missing anything?” I asked. “I know all the tests have come back great, but Dr. T., my gut tells me there is something that we are not addressing.” I’m sure he must hear this from every couple he meets, as we all believe that if we just look hard enough, we might find something that will help.

Dr. T. has a great “bedside manner,” i.e. how to keep the crazies in line! “There might be, but we’ve checked all the things that we know might have an impact on fertility. In ten years’ time, there may be something else that comes to light, but as of now, we’re not aware of it. There are lots of theories out there that may or may not be right, but none have been tested to the point where there is any conclusive evidence.”

I understood his position—the medical world needs evidence. Unfertiles just need one story where it all works out well at the end.

“Do you think we are right to stop trying after this one?” I asked.

“You know, I can’t answer that. It is your decision. But I don’t think the results will get any better.
